Generating images

Write what the picture should show, pick a quality and a shape, and get the image back in seconds.

The Generate dialog

Generate image opens from the Images page, from New image under any result, or with N while the Images page is open. Everything is on one screen:

  1. 1. Prompt: what the image should show
  2. 2. Quality: Fast, Standard or Premium, with the price
  3. 3. Aspect ratio
  4. 4. Format: WebP, JPEG or PNG
  5. 5. Reference image: optional, Standard and Premium
  6. 6. Generate: the price is on the left

The prompt and the settings stay in the dialog if a start fails, so you can try again without typing it all again.

Writing the prompt

Generate image follows the prompt closely. Three things make most of the difference, and the checklist under the prompt field names them:

  • Name the subject

    Why:A vague subject gets a random one.
    Example:"matte black sports coupe with gold rims" instead of "cool car"

  • Pick a style

    Why:Without a style anchor the look is left to chance.
    Example:photorealistic, cinematic still, comic panel, loading screen art

  • Set the light

    Why:One lighting phrase sets the mood better than many adjectives.
    Example:neon-lit night, golden hour, harsh noon sun, wet asphalt reflections
  1. 1. What makes a great prompt: hover a point for the tip

For textures, add the view and the use: "front on", "seamless texture", "neutral lighting". Say "no text" when the picture should stay free of lettering.

A prompt can be up to 2,000 characters. Leave out real brands, logos and people you do not have the rights to.

Fast, Standard and Premium

The quality decides detail, speed and price. The label under each option shows what it is good for and roughly how long it takes.

Premium is the quality made for lettering, and short words work best. If lettering comes out wrong on any quality, fix it with an edit; see Text is misspelled.

Aspect ratio and format

Pick the shape before you generate: 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3 or 3:2. Standard and Premium images are about one megapixel, for example 1024 x 1024 for 1:1 and 1376 x 768 for 16:9. The details on the result page show the exact size.

  • WebP (the default) is small and sharp, and fine for the web and most tools.
  • JPEG suits photos and backgrounds where a program asks for a .jpg.
  • PNG is lossless, for textures you want to edit further.

Note

Generate does not make transparent backgrounds, whatever the format. For a cut-out, use an edit with a transparent background.

Reference image

Standard and Premium show a Reference image field under the format. The picture you add there guides the style and the composition of the new image. It is a source of inspiration, not a picture to change.

  • Fast has no reference field; switching to Fast removes a reference you added.
  • PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF and most other image files work. Drag the file onto the field or click it.
  • To change a picture and keep the rest of it, use Edit image instead.
