Make your tattoos

Uploading your design

What makes an image work as a tattoo, how the studio reads it, and how to add text or adjust it before you place it.

An image that works

The Tattoo Studio puts your image on the skin exactly as it is. Every pixel that is not transparent becomes ink, so the image decides most of the result:

  • A PNG with a transparent background. A white or coloured background is inked too and shows as a box on the skin.
  • Cropped to the design. The studio fits the whole image into the tattoo box, so a wide empty border makes the tattoo small inside it.
  • Square works best, up to 1024 px. Other shapes are padded to a square with transparency.
  • Dark ink reads best on skin. Colour works too; white inside the design is inked white.

The studio takes PNG, JPG, WebP and SVG up to 16 MB. A JPG has no transparency, so only use it for a design that fills its whole square.

Uploading

Every design in the Tattoo Studio starts in the Design section. Drop your image on the drop zone, or click it and pick a file:

  1. 1. Drop a PNG with transparency, or click to upload: your design goes here

The image appears on the ped at once, and the drop zone turns into a thumbnail:

  1. 1. Replace the design: click or drop to swap the image
  2. 2. Add text or adjust the design: opens the design editor
  • Drop or pick another file on the thumbnail to replace the design. The placement stays.
  • The studio makes the image square and at most 1024 px on a side before it goes on the ped. Larger files are scaled down; the build then makes the texture you pick under Texture.

Adding text or adjusting the design

Add text or adjust the design under the thumbnail opens the design editor over the whole screen. It works on your image in layers, at 1024 × 1024 px:

  1. 1. Back to placement: leaves without saving
  2. 2. Use this design: saves your changes into the design
  • Text adds lettering in one of the editor fonts. Lettering from the editor stays sharp, unlike letters the AI draws.
  • Brush, Eraser, Shape and Image paint, erase, add shapes or add a second picture as its own layer.
  • Use this design saves the result into the design. Cancel or Back to placement leave without saving.
  1. 1. Text: adds lettering as its own layer
  2. 2. Eraser: removes parts of the design, such as white fills

Open the editor again later and your layers are still there, as long as the page stays open.

Name and kind

Under the design, every entry has a Name and a Kind:

  1. 1. Name: the name in the shop and in the file names
  2. 2. Kind: tattoo on skin, or patch on the torso
  • Name is the label players see in the tattoo shop. The studio also derives the file and overlay names from it, in lower case with underscores: Swallow becomes swallow.
  • Kind is Tattoo (on skin) or Patch / badge (torso). Patches are only offered on the torso; see MC patches and badges.

Careful

Give every design in a pack its own name. Two designs with the same name stop the build; see The build does not start.

Several designs in one pack

One Tattoo Studio pack holds up to 12 designs, for one price of 40 credits. Tattoos in this pack at the top of the rail lists them:

  1. 1. Add: a new design in the same pack, up to 12
  2. 2. Mountains: the design you are editing
  • Add adds a new entry on the same body zone as the one you are editing. Each entry has its own image, name, zone and placement.
  • Click an entry to edit it. The line under its name shows the zone, the kind, and no design yet while it has no image.
  • The bin icon removes an entry. It shows once the pack has two or more.

The studio lets you add more than 12 entries, but a build with more is refused. A second pack does not help either: all packs of an account share one name, so a new pack replaces the old one on the server. See Several packs on one server.
