Import

Importing a curated model

Check the size next to a person, fix scale and rotation before the conversion, name the prop and import it.

The Configure import dialog

A click on a curated card opens Configure import. It loads the real model file, so you can check it before anything is converted. The header says the import costs no credits.

  1. 1. Select: Rotate and Scale add handles in the view
  2. 2. Show size: puts a person next to the model
  3. 3. Import & convert: starts the conversion
  • The 3D view on the left: drag to turn the camera, turn the mouse wheel to zoom.
  • Select, Rotate and Scale at the top left: Rotate and Scale put handles on the model that you can drag. The numbers on the right follow.
  • Show size at the bottom left: a size reference next to the model.
  • The right column: Project, Transform (optional), License and the import button.

Checking the size

GTA measures in metres, and so does the dialog. Models from game kits are often built at another scale, so check the size before you import. Press Show size: a reference appears next to the model and the button changes to Reference, which hides it again. The menu next to it picks another reference:

  • Michael

    1.88 m
  • Franklin

    1.83 m
  • Trevor

    1.86 m
  • Door

    2.10 m
  • Sedan

    4.50 m
  • Chair

    0.85 m

Michael is a real GTA ped model at in-game scale. The reference stands next to the model, close to the camera, so right after Show size you may see only a dark shape at the edge of the view. Turn the mouse wheel over the view to zoom out until both are in the picture.

  1. 1. Reference: turns the person on and off
  2. 2. Michael · 1.88 m: pick another reference

Scale and rotation

Transform (optional) changes the model before it is converted, so the prop comes out at the right size and the right way up.

  1. 1. Scale: drag, or pick x0.5, x1 or x2
  2. 2. Rotation (°): degrees around X, Y and Z
  3. 3. Output bounds: the size in game, in metres
  4. 4. Import with transform: the scale is baked into the prop
  • Scale: the slider goes from ×0.1 to ×5 and scales all three sides equally. The buttons ×0.5, ×1, ×2 jump to common values. The Scale handles in the view can also stretch one side only.
  • Rotation (°): degrees around X, Y and Z. A model that lies on its back usually stands up with 90 or -90 in X; the view shows the result at once.
  • Output bounds: width, height and depth of the prop in metres, with your scale. For the bench it went from 1.12 × 0.73 × 0.63 m to 1.46 × 0.95 × 0.82 m.
  • Reset puts scale and rotation back to the start.
Show size puts Michael, 1.88 m tall, next to the bench. At x1.00 the bench is 1.12 m long and 0.73 m high, too small for him. The scale slider goes up to x1.30 and the bench grows to 1.46 by 0.95 m, the size of a real park bench.

As soon as scale or rotation differ from the start, the button reads Import with transform and a line under it says the change is baked into the prop. The prop of our run measured exactly 1.46 by 0.95 by 0.82 m in the downloaded files.

Name and usage

  1. 1. Name: becomes the file and model name
  2. 2. Usage profile: World Prop, or Hero Object for things seen up close
  • Name starts with the model name, such as bench. It becomes the name of the prop, its files and the model you spawn in game, so pick a short, unique one: park_bench rather than bench, which other resources may already use. Up to 200 characters; lowercase with underscores is safest.
  • World Prop, Placed in the world: the default. The conversion keeps the prop light, for things that stand around the map, often many times. Textures up to 1024 pixels.
  • Hero Object, Held or worn: keeps more detail for things seen up close. Textures up to 2048 pixels.

Curated models are small, a few hundred triangles, so the usage hardly changes them. It matters for detailed Sketchfab models; see What happens during the import.

Starting the import

Press Import & convert, or Import with transform if you changed the model. The dialog closes and the library takes you to your assets. The new prop sits on top of the list with the type Library import.

  1. 1. Library: shows only library imports
  2. 2. park_bench: the new prop, typed Library import; click it to open
  • A curated import is usually done in about 5 seconds; ours took 5 seconds and 0 credits.
  • You can run 3 asset jobs at the same time. Import more models one after another from the library.
  • Importing the same model again makes a new, separate prop. Nothing is overwritten.
