Searching Sketchfab

Search the free downloadable models on Sketchfab, filtered to licences you may use on a server.

Search and sort

Open the Sketchfab tab at the top of the library. It searches Sketchfab for models that are free to download. Type a word into Search Sketchfab, e.g. police radio and press Enter.

    Most likes on Sketchfab first. The default.

  • Staff picks

    Only models the Sketchfab team picked, most liked first.

  • Recent

    Newest uploads first.

  • Most viewed

    Most views on Sketchfab first.
  • Search in English and with the thing, not the use: wooden barrel, office chair, traffic cone.
  • Add low poly to the search for light, game-ready models.
  • Paging. Each page asks Sketchfab for up to 24 models per switched-on licence and mixes them, so every licence shows up on page one. The arrows at the bottom right load the next page.

The licence switches

CC0, CC-BY and CC-BY-SA at the right of the search bar are all on when the tab opens. Click one to switch it off; the last one stays on. They are the three Sketchfab licences that allow use on a server, also a paid one. What each asks of you is on Licences and credit.

CC0 alone is often empty

Most CC0 models on Sketchfab are museum scans, such as antique chairs and lamps. Everyday game props are nearly all CC-BY or CC-BY-SA. A search for wooden barrel with only CC0 switched on finds nothing; with all three it fills the page. If you need a model without any credit, try Curated packs first.

Categories

The row under the search bar narrows the results to one Sketchfab category. All searches all of them.

The tab offers every category Sketchfab has:

Furniture, Vehicles, Weapons, Electronics, Food, Architecture, Places, Characters, People, Nature, Animals, Science, Sports, Fashion, History, Art, Music, News.

The row scrolls sideways on a narrow window. A category comes from the author, so some models sit in a surprising one; if a search finds too little, go back to All.

The triangle switch

Hide models over 150,000 triangles is ticked by default, because such models rarely survive the conversion. The conversion reduces every model to a budget of about 40,000 triangles for a World Prop, and a model far above that tends to fall apart or fail.

Untick it when you look for one specific model you saw on Sketchfab. Check its triangle count in the import dialog before you import, and expect dense models to lose detail.

Reading a result

  2. 2. SpatialNeglect: the author you credit
  3. 3. 7.5k: triangles
  • The badge is the licence: CC0, BY or BY-SA.
  • The author under the name, such as SpatialNeglect for Crates And Barrels. For BY and BY-SA, this is the person you credit.
  • The triangle count on the right, such as 7.5k; k stands for thousand.

The picture is the author's thumbnail. A result can be a whole scene, like a house on a hill, which imports as one big prop. Pick single objects. A click opens the import dialog; see Importing from Sketchfab.
