Rooms, doors and floors

Resize rooms by their walls, attach new ones, slide the doors, pick floors and wall colours, and stack floors with stairs between them.

The Rooms tool

Press Rooms in the toolbar. The builder selects the first room and puts a grip bar on each of its walls. Click another room to select it. The right panel shows the rooms of the current floor and the selected room:

  1. 1. Add room: attach another room
  2. 2. Room name
  3. 3. + exterior: another door to the outside
  4. 4. Surfaces: floor, walls, ceiling
  5. 5. Ceiling height
  • Name: up to 40 characters. It shows in the README of the build.
  • Size and area: in metres, on the 0.5 m grid.
  • Doors: every door of the room, see below.
  • Remove room (furniture inside is removed): shown when there is more than one room.

Resizing a room

Point at the grip bar of a wall until the cursor turns into a hand, then drag. The wall moves in 0.5 m steps, and the size in the panel follows when you let go. A room is at least 2 m on each side and cannot overlap another room.

In the Rooms tool the selected cafe shows a grip bar on each of its walls. The grip on the east wall is dragged one metre outwards; the outline follows in 0.5 m steps, and the wall moves when the mouse is released.

Adding a room

Press Add room. A ghost of a new 5 x 4 m room follows the mouse. It must touch the wall of an existing room: green means it attaches there, red means it overlaps or floats free. Click to place it.

  • A door to the room it touches is added in the middle of the shared wall.
  • The new room is selected, so you can rename and resize it right away.
  • A design can have up to 24 rooms. The price of the build goes up with the room count; see the price.

Doors

Doors are 1.5 m wide openings. The Doors list of the selected room shows each door and where it leads, Outside or another room:

  • The slider under a door moves it along its wall.
  • + exterior adds another door to the outside, at the first free place on the walls.
  • The bin icon removes a door.

Note

Every interior keeps at least one door to the outside: it is the entrance. The bin icon does nothing on the last one, so add another door first if you want to move the entrance to a different wall.

Floors, walls and ceilings

Under Surfaces each room has a material and a colour for the floor, the walls and the ceiling. The swatch shows the real texture; the build uses the same one. All copies a choice to every room on the same floor.

  1. 1. Wood planks: pick a material
  2. 2. All: same choice for every room on this floor
  • Floor

Wood planks, Mosaic parquet, Floor tiles, Checker tiles, Marble, Carpet, Polished concrete, Epoxy garage floor
  • Walls

Painted wall, Rough plaster, Striped wallpaper, Brick, Wall tiles, Wood panelling, Exposed concrete, Metal panel, Marble
  • Ceiling

Painted wall, Rough plaster, Exposed concrete, Metal panel, Plain ceiling, Office grid ceiling

Outside under Building sets the outer walls. Every pair of material and colour in the design counts as one surface texture; Surface textures shows how many of the 16 you use. More than 16 blocks the build, so reuse colours across rooms.

Ceiling height

Ceiling height under Building sets the height of all rooms at once, from 2.4 to 6 m in 0.1 m steps. A new design starts at 3 m. Rooms cannot have different heights.

More floors and stairs

+ Floor in the toolbar copies the plan of the top floor one storey up, with the doors between rooms but without doors to the outside. A design can have 6 floors. The floor tabs switch between them; you always edit one floor, and the one below shows as a faint outline.

The copied rooms count for the price. Our 2-room cafe with a second floor has 4 rooms, so the build moves from 1,000 to 1,500 credits. Remove rooms you do not need on the upper floor.

Every floor above the ground needs a staircase that starts on the floor below. After + Floor the builder opens the Stairs tool on the new floor. Switch to the floor below with its tab, press Add stairs and drag across the floor to draw the run:

  1. 1. Add stairs: then drag across the floor
  2. 2. Floor 1 has no staircase: blocks the build
  • The run must be at least 1 m wide, with a pitch between 20 and 42 degrees. This run shows the steps and the pitch.
  • A longer run is less steep. 28 to 33 degrees reads as comfortable, like the stairs in GTA.
  • Turn the run (R) turns the direction, Remove staircase deletes it. The opening in the floor above is cut for you.
  • A room on an upper floor must stand fully on rooms below it.

The bin next to the top floor tab removes that floor with its furniture and the stairs up to it.

Plan problems

What would stop a build shows in red in the right panel, and again in the Build dialog under Fix these before building:. The build button stays off until they are fixed.

  • Floor 1 has no staircase. Add one on floor 0.

Draw a staircase on the floor below, or remove the floor.
  • Staircase on floor 0: too steep (45°), make the run longer.

Drag a longer run, or remove and redraw it.
  • 18 different surfaces, at most 16 fit in one package.

Use the same material and colour in more rooms.
