Make your ped
Start from your own model
Upload a GLB, GLTF, VRM, FBX or OBJ, or a ZIP with the model and its textures. Rigged or not, any proportions.
Files that work
The Ped Creator takes a 3D character as GLB, GLTF, VRM, FBX or OBJ, up to 200 MB. A ZIP with the model and its textures works too. In Source, keep 3D model under Start from and drop the file on Drop your character here.
- 1. Start from: 3D model or Image
- 2. Drop your character here: GLB, GLTF, VRM, FBX, OBJ or ZIP up to 200 MB
- 3. Body type: male or female ped template
GLB
One file with the textures inside. The safest choice.GLTF
Put the .gltf, its .bin and the textures into one ZIP.VRM
VRoid and other avatar models. Its rig helps with fingers and legs.FBX
Mixamo, Unreal and most 3D tools. Embed the textures, or put them into a ZIP with the model.OBJ
No rig. Put the .obj, the .mtl and the textures into one ZIP.ZIP
A model plus its texture files, up to 1 GB unpacked.
After the upload the Ped Creator does three things on its own:
- It suggests a ped name:
sws_plus the file name, for examplesws_hero_finalforHero Final.zip. - It saves the draft.
- It starts the first preview, which takes 40 to 75 seconds.
The file card then shows the file name and size, and after the preview the number of objects and triangles.
- 1. File card: name, size, objects and triangles of your model
- 2. Replace: upload another model into this draft
- 3. Body type: walk style, voice slot, ragdoll
Textures and ZIP files
The Ped Creator takes separate texture files in a ZIP: put the model and all its textures into one. It unpacks the ZIP and links each texture to its material by file name.
- Keep the texture names close to the material names, as most exports do.
- With several models in one ZIP, the Ped Creator picks one in this order: GLB, GLTF, VRM, FBX, OBJ. Between two of the same kind, the larger file wins.
- Folders inside the ZIP are fine. The
__MACOSXfolders of a Mac are ignored.
After the first preview, Found in your file in the Materials step lists which texture went to which material. See Textures found in your file.
Rigged or not
The Ped Creator finds the joints in the mesh itself, so a model without a rig works. Any proportions work too: short, tall, wide or long-armed. The skeleton is fitted to your model, not the other way round.
A rig in your file still helps in three places:
- Fingers come from the rig when it has finger bones. They follow the real fingers better than joints found in the mesh.
- With Loose clothing on, hips and knees come from the rig. That matters under skirts and robes, which hide the legs.
- If finding the joints in the mesh fails, Joint source Auto falls back to the rig.
The Ped Creator reads Mixamo, Unreal and Ready Player Me rigs for all joints. VRM, VRoid and 3ds Max Biped rigs help with fingers and legs. Your rig itself is not kept: every ped gets the GTA freemode skeleton with 128 bones.
What makes a good source model
The Ped Creator gets the best result from a clean character. Before you export, check these points:
- One character, standing, with the arms away from the body. A T-pose or an A-pose is ideal. Hands that touch the hips or the clothing pull them along when the arms move.
- A real size in metres. A model below 0.8 m or above 3 m is scaled to 1.80 m; see Height.
- Separate clothing layers are fine. Remove hidden layers can then drop the skin under tight clothes.
- Up to about 120,000 vertices. Above that, the model is reduced evenly before rigging, and a warning says so.
- Extras such as armour, a bag or a base can stay. Pin rigid ones to a bone in Attachments.
On import the Ped Creator drops stray helper objects. Their names show in the Attachments step after Dropped while importing.
Body type
Body type in the Ped Creator picks the ped template, Male or Female. The default is Male. It does not change the shape of your model.
Walk style and voice slot
Written into peds.meta, from a male or a female GTA civilian.Ragdoll on Auto
Male or female, the large version from 2.10 m.The viewport
Which version of an animation plays, and which GTA body Vs. vanilla shows.
Pick the one that matches your character. Changing it marks Source as changed, so update the preview afterwards. It works the same for a model made from a picture.
Replacing the model
To try another file in the same Ped Creator draft, press Replace on the file card and upload the new model.
- Joint corrections are cleared. They were placed on the old model.
- Pinned attachments are cleared, because the object numbers belong to the old file.
- All other settings stay, and a new preview starts on its own.
- The free previews of the draft keep counting down from where they were.
To start over completely, press New draft in the header instead.
