Troubleshooting

Find the message you see. Each one says what it means and what to change. A failed preview never counts against your free previews.

We couldn’t read your model

The Ped Creator shows We couldn't read your model when it cannot open the file or finds no usable mesh in it. The card names the reason when there is one, and Open Source takes you back to the upload.

  • A broken or unusual export. Export the model again as GLB from your 3D tool and upload that.
  • An FBX, GLTF or OBJ whose textures sit in other files. Put the model and its textures into one ZIP.
  • A ZIP without a model inside. It needs one GLB, GLTF, VRM, FBX or OBJ.
  • The uploaded model could not be read from storage. The upload broke off. Upload the file again.

We couldn’t stand your model up

The Ped Creator shows We couldn't stand your model up when the model is not upright after the automatic orientation. The same card appears when its height lands outside 0.3 to 12 m.

  • A message such as The character could not be stood upright (height 174.2 m after orientation). points to the scale. A model exported in centimetres arrives 100 times too tall: export it in metres.
  • A model lying down or upside down: open Fit & size with the card's button. Set Tilt forward / back or Turn, then try again.

We couldn’t find all joints

The Ped Creator shows We couldn't find all joints when the joint detection fails and the file has no rig to fall back on. The message under it reads: The joints could not be found automatically. Place the joint markers in the Skeleton tab.

  • If an earlier preview of this draft worked, open Skeleton and move the joints that are off.
  • On a first preview there are no joints to move yet. Check that the model stands with the arms away from the body. Pin extra parts that touch the body to a bone in Attachments.
  • A file with a Mixamo, Ready Player Me or Unreal rig can use Joint source From rig instead.
  • With From rig set, this card means the rig is not one of those three kinds. Set Auto.

No rig found in your file

The Ped Creator shows No rig found in your file when Joint source is From rig, but your file has no rig. Set Joint source to Auto or From mesh in Skeleton and update the preview.

Your joint corrections no longer fit

The Ped Creator uses Your joint corrections no longer fit when the model, its height or its orientation changed after you moved joints. The corrections belong to the old position, so the editor clears them and runs the preview again without them. That rerun does not count against your free previews.

The Skeleton step then says why, for example “Your joint corrections belonged to an older fit, so they were cleared.” After a change in Fit & size it reads “Height or orientation changed, so the joint corrections were cleared.” Place the joints again on the new preview. See Settings that clear joint corrections.

An attachment does not fit

The Ped Creator shows An attachment does not fit when every object of the file is pinned to a bone. It also appears when a pin names an object that no longer exists.

  • Set at least one object, usually the body, back to Skin to body in Attachments.
  • After Replace the pins are cleared; pin the objects of the new file again.
  1. 1. Open Attachments: opens the step to fix

Rigging stopped halfway

The Ped Creator shows Rigging stopped halfway when one of three stages fails. The message under the title says which:

  • The skeleton could not be fitted to the joint markers.

Check the joints in Skeleton. A joint far outside the body is the usual cause.
  • Skin weights could not be computed for this model.

Check the joints. For a body that is not human-shaped, set Method to Volume in Skin weights.
  • The model could not be moved into the GTA rest pose.

Check the joints, mainly shoulders, elbows and knees.

If it keeps failing with sensible joints, report it; see Still stuck below.

The rig did not pass our checks

The Ped Creator shows The rig did not pass our checks when the rigged ped fails its checks on weights and skeleton. Usually a joint sits in the wrong place: open Skeleton, check both sides, use Mirror if one side is off, and update the preview.

We couldn’t write the game files

The Ped Creator shows We couldn't write the game files when it cannot write the files for GTA. The usual cause is a joint outside the body; check Skeleton.

  • The Story Mode package could not be written. Only the single-player version failed. Turn off Story Mode version, build again, and report it.
  • A message that names a missing game file or the skeleton file: try once more, then report it.

The pictures could not be rendered

The Ped Creator shows The pictures could not be rendered when the ped was built but its pictures were not. Your ped itself is fine. Press Try again. If a build keeps failing here, turn off Render 22 pictures and build again.

We couldn’t turn the picture into a model

The Ped Creator shows We couldn't turn the picture into a model when the 3D model from your picture could not be made. Nothing is charged, and Generate 3D model is available again.

  • Use a picture with one person, full body, front view and a plain background.
  • Crop away other people and large objects.
  • Try again a little later if the picture is fine: the model service can be busy.
  • The model was generated but could not be found. Contact support, nothing was lost. Press Report so we can find the model for you.

This took too long

The Ped Creator shows This took too long when a run hits its time limit, usually on a very dense model. Lower the triangle budgets in Parts, then press Try again. A model above 120,000 vertices is reduced anyway; reducing it before upload makes every preview faster.

Something went wrong on our side

The Ped Creator shows Something went wrong on our side when a run stopped for a reason that is not your model. Press Try again after a minute. The same goes for The preview failed. If it keeps happening, report it.

All free previews are used

The Ped Creator shows All free previews are used when the draft has used its 30 free previews. The message says: This draft has used all 30 free previews. Build the ped or start a new draft.

  • If the last preview matches your settings, Build ped still works.
  • Otherwise press New draft and upload the model again. A new draft has 30 free previews.
  • Failed previews never count, and neither does the automatic rerun after cleared joint corrections.

A preview is already running

The Ped Creator shows A preview is already running when your account starts a second preview, for example from another tab. Each account runs one at a time. The editor follows the running preview instead; wait for it, then update again. A preview that has hung for 20 minutes no longer blocks.

The ped name or a setting is not valid

The Ped Creator shows The ped name is not valid when the server refuses the name, and opens Name & build. Pick another name; see The ped name.

A setting is not valid means a value is outside its range. The message names it, for example fit.targetHeight must be 0 (keep) or 0.5-3.5 m. Undo the change you made last, then update the preview.

Your model is missing

The Ped Creator shows Your model is missing when the upload of your model did not finish. The message says: The upload did not finish. Please upload the file again. Open Source with the card's button, press Replace and upload the file again.

The Ped Creator is not open yet or offline

The Ped Creator shows The Ped Creator is not open yet with “We are testing it right now. It opens for everyone soon.” while it is not open for your account. Back to assets takes you back.

The Ped Creator is offline means our servers for it are down for a moment. Your draft is saved; try again in a few minutes. The Ped Creator could not be loaded comes with Try again.

The upload is refused

The Ped Creator checks every file before the upload and says under the drop zone what is wrong:

  • Upload a GLB, GLTF, VRM, FBX or OBJ file, or a ZIP with the model and its textures.

Export the model in one of these formats.
  • This file is larger than 200 MB.

Lower the texture sizes or the triangle count before you export, or zip it.
  • Upload a PNG or JPG picture.

Save the picture as PNG or JPG. WebP is refused.
  • This picture is larger than 20 MB.

Save it smaller, for example as JPG.
  • The picture is not a PNG or JPEG file

The file was renamed. Save it as a real PNG or JPG.
  • The upload was rejected (403). Please try again.

Upload again. An upload link is valid for 30 minutes.
  • The upload could not reach the storage. Check your connection and try again.

Check the connection, then upload again.

Build ped does not start

Build ped in the Ped Creator stays grey until the last preview matches every setting, the name is valid and your credits are enough. The line under the button says which one is missing; every line is listed in When Build ped unlocks.

When you press it and the build does not start, the footer says why:

  • The price is now 2,000 credits. Check it and build again. The price changed, for example when a discount started or ended. Press Build ped again.
  • You need 2,500 credits, you have 800. Press Top up.
  • Too many requests: Concurrent asset job limit reached (3/3) Three of your jobs are running across all tools. Wait for one to finish.
  • The ped name is not valid The editor opens Name & build; pick another name.

Warnings under the view

After each preview the Ped Creator lists up to three warnings under WATCH FOR. They never block the build. Each one points at something you will see in game:

  1. 1. WATCH FOR: up to three warnings
  • The feet float 6 cm above the ground in game

Something reaches below the feet. Set Ground offset to the value the warning names.
  • Hips sit 18 cm below the GTA root

Seats and cars place the ped that far off. Turn on Fit to game proportions. For hips above the root, check the hip joints.
  • Game proportions: the legs were stretched as far as allowed

The legs reached their limit. For a tall ped it says shortened. Check the hip joints in Skeleton; if they are right, the rest of the offset stays.
  • In the GTA pose the model is 2.88 m tall instead of 2.40 m

Arms grown into the body, or joints in the wrong place. Check the neck, shoulder and arm joints in Skeleton. For a picture, keep Redraw into A-pose first on.
  • The hip joints were found 28 cm away from the model's own rig

A skirt or robe hides the legs. Turn on Loose clothing, or move the hip and knee joints.
  • The left and right wrist joints are 58 cm apart when mirrored

Neither side looked right to the automatic check. Check both markers in Skeleton, mirror the good side, or pin an extra part that touches the body.
  • One side of the joint detection was implausible and was mirrored from the other side: wrist (right side).

The Ped Creator copied the good side for you. If the two sides really differ, for example one robot arm, place that side's markers in Skeleton yourself, or pin the extra part in Attachments.
  • Fingers tear in hand gestures

The finger joints do not sit on the fingers. Move them, or turn Fingers off.
  • Long clothing hides the hips, so the hip and knee joints were placed from normal body proportions (the detection had them at the hem) and the clothing below the hips moves loosely with both legs. Check the hip and knee markers in the Skeleton tab.

Expected for long coats, robes and skirts on a model without its own rig. Check the hips and knees in Skeleton and the ped in Sit (car). See Loose clothing.
  • This model is too coarse for finger joints (5,914 triangles): the fingers move rigidly with the hand. Use a higher quality model for moving fingers.

Expected under 15,000 triangles, for example a low-poly game model. A model from a picture always has enough.
  • Automatic joint detection failed; joints were taken from the model's own rig.

Usually fine. Check the ped in Walk and Sit (car).
  • Model was reduced from 412000 to about 120000 vertices before rigging.

Fine in most cases. For more control, reduce the model in your 3D tool before the upload.
  • Material settings for unknown materials were ignored

A type was set for a material the new file does not have. Set the types again in Materials.

The build writes the warnings into README.txt as notes, so you can check them later.

The ped does not appear in game

When a Ped Creator ped is installed but nobody can use it, go through these in order:

  • The ensure line must match the folder name exactly, for example ensure sws_mechanic.
  • fxmanifest.lua must sit directly in the resource folder, not in a second folder inside it.
  • Restart the server, then reconnect. New ped models are only picked up when a player connects.
  • When the model is not loaded, the chat command prints this in the F8 console: [sws_mechanic] model not found - is the resource started, and did you reconnect?
  • Scripts and ped menus need the exact ped name, in lowercase.
  • A framework that puts the saved freemode look back on spawn switches you back. Test with the chat command first.

The ped looks wrong in game

Most problems you see on a Ped Creator ped in game also show in the viewport. Find the symptom:

  • The ped floats above the ground

A robe, cape, tail or base reaches below the feet. Set a negative Ground offset.
  • The ped sits too low in cars and on chairs

  • A very tall ped sinks into the floor when walking

Its hips sit far above those of a GTA ped. Fit to game proportions shortens the legs a little; beyond that it is a limit of the GTA animations.
  • A skirt or robe tears between the legs

  • A knee or an elbow bends in the wrong place

Move that joint in Skeleton, or mirror the good side.
  • Fingers stretch in gestures

Move the finger joints, or turn Fingers off.
  • Skin pokes through tight clothes

Turn on Remove hidden layers. It needs separate body and clothing layers.
  • A jacket or coat sticks out at the hips

The hands hung next to the clothing in the source, so arm and body grew together. The Ped Creator cuts such an armpit free on its own. If the edge still follows the arms, check the Rigged view from behind. Then give the arms room in the source: export in an A-pose, or show them away from the body in a picture.
  • A helmet, sword or armour bends

Pin it to one bone in Attachments.
  • Long hair stretches when getting into a car

Keep Hair follows the head on in Skin weights.
  • Glass is solid or glowing parts are dark

  • The skin of a VRoid model looks pale grey

GTA has no toon shading, so the shade colours are lost. Darken the skin texture in your file if needed.
  • The ped looks blurry up close

Set Texture size to 2048 in Materials.
  • Long weapons clip through a bulky body

GTA holds every weapon at the vanilla position. There is no setting for it.
  • The feet dip into the ground when landing a jump

Vanilla peds do the same, by about 6 cm.
