Paint on the original texture

The texture editor opens on the original weapon texture. Paint over it, add text, shapes and pictures in layers, and watch the result on the 3D weapon.

Opening the editor

Paint next to a texture opens the texture editor full screen. It starts on the original texture of the weapon, so you paint on top of the real layout instead of guessing where the parts are. On a texture you already changed the button reads Edit and opens your version.

The same editor is behind Paint in the Look step of an addon weapon, see Reskin a vanilla weapon.

Tools and layers

The tools sit in the bar at the bottom, the layers on the right.

  • Move

Select, move, scale and turn layers.
  • Brush

Free painting, for example worn edges or a stripe.
  • Eraser

Removing parts of a painted layer.
  • Text

Names, numbers and engravings, with a choice of fonts, bold and italic.
  • Shape

Rectangles and ellipses, for colour blocks and plates.
  • Image

A logo or a pattern from your computer. You can also drop or paste an image onto the canvas.
  • Original texture is the bottom layer and is locked, so it cannot be moved by accident. Everything you add lands on its own layer above it, with its own opacity and blend mode.
  • Colour adjustments such as exposure, contrast, saturation, hue and temperature work on a whole layer, for example to recolour the original.
  • Undo with Ctrl+Z, redo with Ctrl+Shift+Z. The ? button at the bottom right lists every shortcut.

Finding the right spot

A weapon texture is the weapon laid flat: barrel, receiver, grip and magazine sit next to each other on one image, often turned or mirrored. Two helpers show what lands where:

  • UV guide: draws the outline of every part of the weapon over the texture. Its opacity is adjustable, and it is never part of the result.
  • Mini preview: the 3D weapon in the corner follows every stroke, so you see at once whether a logo sits on the side of the receiver or on the grip.

Patterns that fill the whole texture, such as camo, carbon or wood, need no aiming at all. Place details such as a logo or a name last, inside one outline of the guide.

Applying and going back

  • Apply to weapon at the top right puts the result on the weapon and closes the editor.
  • Cancel closes the editor without changes.
  • The round arrow next to a changed texture takes it back to the original.

Note

Your pack saves to your account as you work. A reload opens it again, and Saved packs at the top lists every pack you started. The finished picture of each texture is saved; the separate layers of the editor are not, so a texture you reopen later starts as one layer.

Tips for a clean skin

  • Keep the original visible under semi-transparent colour layers. The grooves, screws and wear of the original then show through your colour.
  • Mid tones read best in game. Pure black loses every detail and pure white glares in sunlight.
  • Transparency only means something on Markings and decals: transparent areas keep the original markings. On the body texture the editor exports a solid image.
  • Small text becomes unreadable at game distance. Use large letters, or put text on the markings texture where a plate sits.
